Some events are fun.

Some events tell a good story.

And then there are the ones that feel like coming home.

This year's Reckoning, held in the incredible Billie Creek Village, was exactly that.

From the moment players started arriving, the village transformed into a living world. Weathered wooden buildings, winding dirt paths, and the constant feeling that something was lurking just beyond the next corner made Billie Creek the perfect home for the March. It didn't feel like a backdrop it felt alive.

And that's thanks in no small part to the new game runners.

You can see the passion they're pouring into this game. Every interaction, every quest, every political conversation, and every battlefield encounter felt like another thread weaving together a world that continues to grow long after the event ends. Reckoning isn't just becoming a weekend game it's becoming a living setting where your choices matter.

A Weekend of Perfect (Mostly) Weather

Mother Nature was surprisingly kind this year. (and we kinda needed the win with weather after the last 2 years)

Friday was warm enough to keep everyone moving without being miserable, with just enough rain to make the village feel even more atmospheric. Those scattered showers only added to the mood, making the forests and streets feel like they belonged in a fantasy novel.

Saturday cooled off enough that many of the Vadurkin players finally got an excuse to break out their beautiful fur layers, looking right at home wandering through the village.

Then Sunday arrived.

By pack-out, sweaters and cloaks had replaced lighter garb as everyone hurried to load cars while trying to stay warm. It was one of those Midwest weekends where you experience three seasons in three days and somehow it just worked.

The Nightmare Queen

The story this year revolved around stopping the Nightmare Queen and finding the mysterious Bear Totem before it could be used against the March.

Simple enough...

Until it wasn't.

Instead of destroying the threat outright, the totem shattered into countless pieces, scattering across the realm. Suddenly every faction wanted a piece of it.

Even the undead.

That single moment shifted everything.

Politics Over Steel

Deals were struck.

Promises were made.

One of my favorite things about Reckoning has always been that the biggest battles aren't always fought with swords.

Deals were struck.

Promises were made.

Old grudges were set aside for a while. While other feel completely apart.

New alliances formed while older ones quietly fell apart.

Political marriages strengthened kingdoms, while others never survived the chaos surrounding them. Some relationships became stronger than ever. Others ended before they had the chance to begin.

Every camp had something to gain.

Every camp had something to lose.

Watching the politics unfold was just as entertaining as watching the battles themselves.

Growth... and the Afterlife

Perhaps the best part of any LARP isn't the monsters or the quests.

It's watching the players grow.

This weekend was full of character-defining moments. Heroes were tested. Villains found unexpected allies. Friends became enemies, and enemies found common ground when survival demanded it.

Of course...

Not everyone made it.

The afterlife was busy this weekend.

Whether your character returned or their story ended there, those moments carried real emotional weight. They reminded everyone that actions have consequences and that no one is guaranteed another sunrise in the March.

Victory... At What Cost?

In the end, the Nightmare Queen was banished.

The Bear Totem was finally destroyed.

The immediate threat was over.

The camps celebrated.

But every victory in Reckoning seems to leave behind unanswered questions.

What bargains were made to reach this point?

What power was unleashed along the way?

What wounds—political and personal—will still be felt months from now?

Looking Ahead

As both a player and photographer, I left Billie Creek with memory cards full of incredible moments and a heart that's already looking forward to next year.

The new leadership is building something special. They're creating a world that rewards investment, encourages storytelling, and gives every player the opportunity to leave their mark on the history of the March.

If this year is any indication, Reckoning's future is incredibly bright.

The Nightmare Queen has fallen.

The Bear Totem is gone.

But somehow...

I have a feeling our story is only just beginning.

We'll find out what awaits us in the March next year.
