Photography & Storytelling by GamerGurl Photography

There are moments when reality fades and you’re transported not just visually, but emotionally  into a world alive with story, conflict, and camaraderie.

That was Reckoning LARP 2025: nights lit by full moons, stories unfolding around campfires, and battles that felt cinematic.

There’s something undeniable about nights lit only by the glow of a full moon and the sparkle of stars   especially when that night finds you immersed in a world of myth, warriors, and story. That’s exactly where I found myself at Reckoning LARP, a high-immersion fantasy live action roleplay event that invites players to live, fight, and tell stories in a land shaped by culture, conflict, and camaraderie.

An Immersive World of Lore

Reckoning isn’t “just a game.” It’s a handcrafted fantasy realm where every player matters and every decision echoes through tales of conflict and alliance. Set in the March a land shared by four distinct cultures this event blends politics, battle, myth, and community into one breathtaking experience.

Among these cultures, the Vadurkin stood out to me with their storied past as resilient mountain folk, hardened by the biting winds and rugged terrain of the Snostein Mountains. Their traditions, honor-bound fighting prowess, and fierce bond to ancestry make them not only visually striking but deeply compelling subjects to photograph.

A group of people in casual clothing embrace outdoors during golden hour lighting in a natural setting.

The Cultures of Reckoning: Many Peoples, One Living World

One of the most striking elements of Reckoning LARP is how deeply its cultures are defined not just in costume or combat style, but in values, traditions, and presence. Each culture brings a distinct rhythm to the world, and you can feel it when they move through camp or onto the battlefield.

From disciplined formations to passionate war cries, every group tells its own story:

The Hadrian stand as symbols of order, structure, and steel-forged resolve. Their polished armor and controlled movements speak to a culture built on discipline and duty.

The Suzak-Mar burn bright with intensity and devotion. Their energy is fiery, emotional, and impossible to ignore every moment feels charged with purpose.

The Rivlans carry a sense of heart and resilience, grounded in community and song. Their presence feels warm even in the midst of chaos, rooted in shared history and camaraderie.

The Vadurkin embody endurance and ancestral pride. Mountain-hardened and unyielding, they move like legends shaped by stone and storm, their lore worn visibly in scars, symbols, and stance.

Photographing these cultures felt like documenting living histories. Every banner, braid, and battered shield added depth to the world and every interaction between cultures layered the story even further. Reckoning thrives because these identities are respected, celebrated, and woven together into something larger than any single group.

Community Beneath the Stars

What made this experience unforgettable wasn’t only the lore or combat it was the community. From the moment I arrived, I felt welcomed into a tight-knit gathering of passionate creatives who weren’t just playing parts but living them. Players wove lore into every interaction, campfire conversation, and battle, bringing the world of Reckoning to life in ways no scripted performance ever could.

There’s magic in watching people build stories together watching friendships form in shared quests, watching rivalries burn bright in  battles, and feeling that electric thrill when a Vadurkin raid is called at dusk and everyone scrambles into position.

The Baddies: Orcs & Undead — Fear Made Flesh

No legend is complete without its monsters and at Reckoning, the Orcs and Undead are far more than simple antagonists. They are the embodiment of fear, pressure, and consequence.

The Orcs are raw, brutal, and relentless. Their presence hits like a war drum in the chest  loud, aggressive, and impossible to ignore. When Orcs enter the field, the energy shifts. Players tighten ranks, grip weapons harder, and brace for impact. Photographing them meant capturing motion, fury, and the terrifying beauty of controlled chaos.

The Undead, by contrast, bring a colder kind of dread. Silent, methodical, and unsettling, they move with an inevitability that sends chills through the camp. Lantern light glinting off hollow eyes, tattered armor dragging through the dirt they feel like something pulled straight from a nightmare.

Together, these forces elevate Reckoning’s stakes. They create moments of desperation, heroism, sacrifice, and triumph. They force players to react in character, emotionally and instinctively and those reactions are where some of the most powerful images are born.

The Orcs and Undead aren’t just “the bad guys.”

They are catalysts sharpening the story, forging alliances, and reminding everyone that this world is alive… and dangerous.

Battles, Raids, and Rich Stories

Photographing Reckoning felt less like shooting an event and more like capturing a legend in motion.

Battles roared to life with sound, movement, and intensity  every swing and shout a testament to the players’ investment in their characters.

Raids brought strategy and suspense, with players coordinating under the fading light and narrating their own versions of heroism and defeat.

Stories unfolded everywhere from whispered schemes by lantern light to celebration songs around the fire.

Whether it was an armored Hadrian warrior pausing to relight a torch or a group of Vadurkin shield-maidens sharing a quiet moment between skirmishes, each frame was a story waiting to be told

Living the Lore  One Frame at a Time

At Reckoning, the world isn’t simply played it’s lived. Players step into cultures from the March with rich backstories and motivations, and every character’s choices ripple through the event. It’s a photographer’s dream and a storyteller’s goldmine.

As one participant put it, “It felt like I was living in Game of Thrones. Immersive, cinematic, and real!” This feeling of becoming part of a larger narrative  was echoed by many who shared their reflections after the event.

Another player described Reckoning as “like coming home,” a sentiment that perfectly captures the emotional resonance of a weekend spent under the stars with allies and rivals alike

Nights Around the Fire

For many, the magic wasn’t just in the battles, but in the quiet shared moments.

“Nights around the fire with the greater community are so far my favorite.” — Blaið, Rivlan

The group shots you see in the gallery? They aren’t just beautiful they’re moments of connection, where friendships were deepened, stories were shared, and new quests were born.

Battles, Raids, and Powerful Moments

The energy at Reckoning shifts between the stillness of night and the rush of battle. As one Hadrian player shared:

“The roleplay was top-notch. Everyone takes their character very seriously. There's always a quest to be had or a battle to be fought.” — Xander (Alex Coffey)

The unexpected often becomes the most memorable. One Rivlan recounted:

“An Orc hit me with Compel and commanded me to attack my allies… watching my wife still in the fray trying to heal felt crushing! — Raven / Korbyn of Willowbog

These are the moments that give depth to the imagery where action and emotion collide in ways that feel genuinely alive.

What Reckoning Feels Like

Participants used powerful, evocative words when describing their experience:

Immersive, cinematic, and real

At peace under the stars

Like being part of something alive

For some, this event becomes personal a world that stays with you long after the packs are packed and the armor is put away.

A Community Like No Other

More than costumes or combat, Reckoning is about the people.

“I have described them, as a whole, as the most welcoming community I have ever experienced.” — Blaið, Rivlan

Players spoke about finding friendship, growth, and shared passion in a way that blurred the line between gamer and family.

Photography and Presence

A figure in medieval fantasy cosplay armor and cloak stands in a misty field near rustic buildings.

As a photographer, moments like these go beyond lighting and composition they capture presence. When players later saw themselves in the photos, reactions ranged from feeling proud and hyped to deeply emotional and reflective, reinforcing how meaningful their time in character truly was.

This is why photography at Reckoning doesn’t feel like documenting an event   it feels like capturing a world.

Photographing Reckoning under moonlit skies brought its own set of challenges shifting shadows, the soft glow of campfires, unexpected motion but that’s part of the allure. It pushed me creatively and technically, rewarding patience with vivid, cinematic moments that felt like pages out of a fantasy novel.

This wasn’t posed. This wasn’t staged.

This was real people living real stories in a world they helped build.

Reckoning LARP is more than an event it’s an invitation to become part of something larger, a creative tapestry woven by players and storytellers alike. As a photographer, it was one of the most inspiring weekend journeys I’ve had the pleasure to document. Nights under the stars, fierce battles, epic tales of culture and conflict   I left with images that feel like memories from another world.

If you ever get the chance to attend Reckoning, take it. You’ll walk away with a story of your own  and perhaps a few legends of your own.
