LARP weekends are a blur of combat, roleplay, hiking, scheming, dancing around the fire, and somehow still finding time to sleep on the ground. It’s immersive, exhausting, and if you’re not careful an easy place to accidentally under-eat.

Many players don’t realize how much energy they burn at events. You’re moving constantly, carrying gear, standing for long periods, sprinting into battle, and staying mentally “on” for hours. Undereating can leave you drained, dizzy, cranky, and far less capable in combat or roleplay.

So how do you make sure you’re actually fueling your body without breaking immersion or missing key moments in-game? Let’s talk strategy.

Understand Your Energy Needs (LARP ≠ A Normal Day)

At a typical LARP, you are likely burning far more calories than usual due to:

Long periods of walking and hiking

Carrying heavy kit

Fighting, dodging, or sparring

Emotional adrenaline spikes

Heat, cold, or weather exposure

Little downtime

If you normally eat ~2,000 calories a day, you may need 2,500–3,000+ at a weekend event—especially if you’re active in battles or logistics.

Rule of thumb: If you feel shaky, lightheaded, unusually irritable, or extremely fatigued early in the day—you likely need more food and electrolytes.

Plan Your Meals Like You Plan Your Kit

Think of food as part of your loadout.

Before Game (Breakfast Matters)

Eat something substantial before you kit up:

Protein: eggs, sausage, tofu, yogurt, or protein shake

Carbs: toast, oatmeal, fruit, or potatoes

Fat: butter, avocado, or nuts

This gives you a stable base so you don’t crash at first bell.

Bring In-Game Friendly Snacks (Your Secret Weapon)

You don’t want to constantly break immersion to run to your tent. Keep snacks that feel natural in your pouch or bag:

Good options:

Jerky or meat sticks

Dried fruit

Trail mix or nuts

Cheese sticks

Energy bars (wrapped quietly)

Honey sticks

Hard crackers or flatbread

Peanut butter packets

If you’re a tavern or merchant role? Even better snack openly in-character.

Hydration + Electrolytes (More Important Than You Think)

Water alone isn’t always enough, especially in heat or heavy activity.

Bring:

Water bottle or waterskin

Electrolyte packets

A pinch of salt + juice mix

Coconut water

Dehydration mimics hunger so don’t mistake thirst for “I just need food.”

Meal Timing: Eat Between Scenes, Not During Them

instead of waiting until you’re starving:

Eat a small snack every 2–3 hours

Grab a bite right after a battle or big roleplay moment

Fuel up during lulls in gameplay instead of scrolling your phone

This keeps your energy steady and prevents sudden crashes.

🧠 Quick Tips (stay in-game)

Pack Portion snacks into “ration bags” so you can grab-and-go.
Timing Bite every 2–3 hours—especially after battles or long walks.
Immersion Call them “battle provisions” or “mana potions” and snack in-character.
Hydrate If you feel off, try water + electrolytes before assuming hunger.

Don’t Skip the Big Meal

Whether it’s a feast, tavern food, or camp cooking—eat a real meal.

Try to include:

Protein (meat, beans, tofu)

Carbs (rice, bread, pasta, potatoes)

Veg (for micronutrients and digestion)

If you’re someone who “forgets to eat,” set a reminder or buddy up with a friend to make food a social moment.

Stay In Character While You Fuel

Some fun ways to keep immersion:

“Rations from the quartermaster”

“Battle provisions”

“Mage’s energy draught” (electrolyte drink)

“Traveler’s trail mix”

“Feast offerings to the gods”

Food doesn’t have to break immersion it can enhance it.

Warning Signs You’re Under-Fueling

If you experience any of these, take a break and eat:

Dizziness or lightheadedness

Extreme fatigue

Headache

Irritability (“hangry” mood)

Trouble concentrating

Muscle weakness

Cold chills or shaking

Quick LARP Calorie Checklist

Before you go, pack:

☐ Breakfast foods

☐ High-protein snacks

☐ Easy carbs (bread, crackers, fruit)

☐ Electrolytes

☐ Refillable water container

☐ One solid meal per day

LARP is physically demanding, mentally immersive, and wildly fun but you can’t be your best warrior, mage, or rogue if your body is running on empty.

Fuel well. Fight harder. Roleplay better. Stay legendary. ⚔️
